Mr Benn and his adventures are fondly remembered from the television series first aired in 1971 and 1972. The BBC commissioned 13 episodes, each 15 minutes long, written and illustrated by his creator David McKee. Mr Benn originally appeared in a 1967 book entitled 'Mr Benn - Red Knight', which was later turned into the first episode for the television series. Mr Benn's 14th adventure, 'The Gladiator', was published as a book in 2001 and was produced for television in 2005. "As if by magic the Shopkeeper appeared..." In every episode Mr Benn goes into the fancy dress shop and tries on a new costume in the fitting room. After admiring himself in the mirror he goes through another door into a magical world of adventures associated with his costume. After his adventure the Shopkeeper returns Mr Benn to the ordinary world and when he gets home he always finds that he has a souvenir to remind him of his exploits.
